Rajiv Gandhi: Rahul Gandhi calls former PM Rajiv Gandhi a ‘visionary leader’

Recalling former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 31st death anniversary, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that his father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India.

On Twitter, the Waynead MP said, “My father was a visionary leader whose policies helped shape modern India. He was a compassionate and kind man and a wonderful father to me and Priyanka, who taught us the value of our forgiveness and empathy. Miss and remember the time we spent together. ”

Rahul Gandhi is on a visit to London where he will address the India at 75 event on May 23 at Cambridge University.

Meanwhile, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi paid their last respects at the 31st death anniversary of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at Bir Bhumi in the national capital on Saturday.

Congress leaders P Chidambaram and Sachin Pilot also paid tributes to the former prime minister at Bir Bhumi in Delhi.

Rajiv Gandhi took charge of the Congress in 1984 after the assassination of his mother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India at the age of 40 when he took office in October 1984. He served as the Prime Minister of India until December 2, 1989.

Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber on May 21, 1991 at an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
